  Texas

Texas is located in the southwestern part of the United States of America.

History

The name Texas is derived from a word in the Caddoan language, tecas, which means friends (or allies). Texas was part of Mexico before declaring its independence in 1836. It became part of the United States in 1845. It is the 28th state and has a land area of 268,581 square miles.

The population of Texas is over 22 million.

Geographical Features

Texas is the southern part of the Great Plains. The southern border touches Sierra Madre Oriental. The northern border is shared with Oklahoma. Louisiana and Arkansas lie to the east while New Mexico and other Mexican states are aligned along the south.

Texas has four main geographical subdivisions. These are Gulf Coastal Plains, Interior Lowlands, Great Plains, and The Basin and Range province.

Due to its huge size, Texas does not make an easy state to categorize. The local residents have their own version of the various regions of Texas that seldom coincide with the geographical regions. So the politically defined geographic, economic, and cultural categorizations for better understand of the state can easily lead to confusion when compared to the socially defined parameters for the same categories.

Texas Weather

Since Texas is so huge, it overlaps many climate zones. This leads to a lot of variety in weather conditions though it is a single state. March to July is the season for Tornadoes throughout Texas. Rainfall is also variable with El Paso averaging only 7.8" although the annual average for Texas is 59". There is also a moderate amount of snowfall during winter. The maximum average summer temperature can range from 80 Fahrenheit to 100 Fahrenheit depending on the location.

Things to see

Out of the five cities in the United States that have permanently established companies that contribute to the main performing arts disciplines one of them is Houston, Texas.

Houston is acknowledged by most sources as the third most important city when it comes to contemporary visual arts.

The Houston Theatre District is a 17 block area in Downtown Houston that is ranked second in the United States (after New York) in the number of theatre seats. Houston has 12,948 seats for live performances and 1,480 seats in movie theatres.

Modern Art Museum (Fort Worth)

Located in North Texas and often referred to as The Modern, the museum was founded in 1892. It is the oldest art museum in Texas.

Other museums include Kimbell Art Museum, National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, Amon Carter Museum, Bass Performance Hall, Will Rogers Memorial Center.

Some more noteworthy places include the Dallas Museum of Art, Moron H. Meyerson Symphony Center, and the Nasher Sculpture Center.
