  New Jersey

New Jersey is located in the Mid Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States of America. It is often referred to as simply Jersey though this is usually in informal circumstances.

New Jersey is the fourth smallest and tenth most populous state in the United States. The state is named after an island in the English Channel called Jersey.

The northern border is shared with New York. The eastern side of New Jersey faces the Atlantic Ocean. The southwester areas are against Delaware ad the western border touches Pennsylvania. Some parts of New Jersey lie in the metropolitan regions of New York, Philadelphia, and Delaware Valley.

History
Native Americas had inhabited the area of New Jersey for over 10 millennia before the Swedes and the Dutch settled in it. Later on, the British converted this region into the New Jersey Colony.

Many of the decisive battles in the American Revolutionary War were fought at New Jersey.

After that, the working class cities like Paterson drove the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. The suburban boom of the 1950s resulted in a growth explosion of New Jersey due to its central location surrounded by other major commercial centers.

New Jersey is made up twenty-one counties. Some of these counties are as they existed in colonial times while the remaining counties were partitioned from other counties in the 1800s.

Unique Political System
New Jersey is the only state where elected officials are called Freeholders.

Every county can decide whether the executive and legislative functions can be performed by the 9 member Board of Chosen Freeholders or should it functions be split into separate branches of government. In certain counties, the Board of Chosen Freeholders perform both the duties on a commission basis where each Freeholder is assigned a responsibility for a department or a group of departments. In other counties, there is a County Executive who is elected to perform the executive functions while the Board of Chosen Freeholders performs only the legislative duties.
