Morocco is a beautiful place that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. The southern coast of touches the Western Sahara and in sharp contrast the northern edge is snuggled beside the snow covered Atlas Mountains. The area contained within the Atlantic Ocean and the northern mountains is covered with fertile plains.

Places to visit

Fes is one of the oldest of Moroccan cities and is often referred to as "the heart of Morocco". The medina of Fed el-Bali or Old Fes is one of the world's largest medieval cities that is still occupied to this day.

Marrakesh is the former capital of Morocco and is famous for its markets and festivals. Children are especially very fond of this place because of the countless diversions provided by magicians, snake charmers, and acrobats.

Rabat is a city where history resides comfortably among contemporary neighborhoods with a good mixture of Islamic and European culture.

Casablanca is modern city where you can actually manage to escape the oriental influence that is ever-present in Morocco. People who come to Morocco looking for an Oriental experience might feel lost by the clean and modern atmosphere of Casablanca.

Some other attractions include Ait Benhaddou that is the most exotic and well-preserved kasbahs in the Atlas area. This area is also very popular among filmmakers.

A very spectacular and unique view can be enjoyed from the Central Medina. There are open air food stalls, storytellers, snake charmers, and musicians to entertain anyone and everyone.

Another big tourist attraction is the world's third biggest religious monument - the Hasan II Mosque. No visit to Morocco is complete without a visit to this mammoth place of worship. The architecture of the mosque is unique in that the exterior shows a clear French influence and the interior is more conventional Moroccan design.

Also located in Morocco are the world's largest and well preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis. These ruins can be traced all the way back to the 2nd and 3d centuries. Excavations that were carried out here have revealed traces of Carthaginian traders.

During the month of May, the atmosphere takes on a festival-like frenzy as Muslims from all over the world flock to Morocco for the Mousseum of Sid Mohammed Ma al-Ainin. This is the only time of the year to see the "blue people" or the Tuareq nomads of Sahara. This time is also known as the National Folklore Festival of Marrakesh, a ten day even that features dancers, musicians, and other entertainers from all over the country.
