  Kentucky

Kentucky, or sometimes referred to as the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is a state of the United States located in the south although it is possible for some sources to list it as being in the middle western region geographically.

History
Kentucky joined the United States in 1792 and became the 15th state of the US.

Kentucky's position in the south or in the Midwest gets confusing because it borders on the states of the Midwest as well as the Southeast. To the east of Kentucky one finds West Virginia and Virginia. Tennessee is across the southern border, Missouri on the western front, and finally Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio to the north.

The northern border is also defined by the Ohio River and the western border is similarly formed by the Mississippi River. Some of the other rivers that run through the state of Kentucky are Kentucky River, Tennessee River, the Cumberland Rivers, the Green River, and the Licking River.

Kentucky
Kentucky has rightly earned the nickname of "Bluegrass State" because of the abundance of bluegrass on nearly every lawn and pasture in the commonwealth. Kentucky is also quite famous for its thoroughbred horses, horseracing, coal, bluegrass music, college basketball, and distilleries.

Kentucky is usually divided in five main areas
• The Cumberland Plateau to the east
• The Bluegrass Region in the northern-central areas
• The Pennyroyal Plateau in the southern-central and western regions
• The Western Coal Fields
• The Jackson Purchase far to the west.

Geographic Features
Kentucky is also the only state in the United States whose land area is not contiguous but exists in small parts in other states. The parts of Kentucky to the extreme west include Kentucky Bend on the Mississippi River that are bordered by Missouri and are accessible via Tennessee. This little oddity was created by the New Madrid Earthquake. There is also another part of Kentucky on the other side of the Ohio and connected to Indiana.

The Bluegrass Region is further divided into two main parts. The Inner Bluegrass region is an area around Lexington encompassed in a 90-mile circle. Outer Bluegrass is the region that includes most of the northern part of the state.

With the exception of the Hardin, Meade, and LaRue counties in the Pennyroyal Region, the entire Bluegrass Region is referred to as the Golden Triangle. Within this triangle, one can find the biggest and fastest growing cities and counties within the state of Kentucky.

Population
The largest city in Kentucky is Louisville Metro with a population of over half a million. The metropolitan areas of Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky have a population of 2 million and together they represent 50% of the state population.
