England is the largest and most populous constituency in the United Kingdom. More than 83% percent of the UK population is in England. Britain shares its borders with Scotland and Wales. Apart from that it is hemmed in by the North Sea, Irish Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and the English Channel.

Geographical Features

England mostly consists of hills with the northern regions being more mountainous with the low Pennines that run north south. The Channel Tunnel links England to the European mainland with the English-French border located about midway along the tunnel. Located on the southern coast at Poole is the largest natural harbor of England. It is supposed to be the second largest natural harbor in the world.

Climate

The climate in England is temperate. There is lots of rain all through the year. The minimum average temperature is 23 Fahrenheit and the maximum is 86 Fahrenheit. There is some snowfall during the winter and early spring.

What to see

Central London is the most happening place in England. Within the city, you can visit St. Paul's Cathedral, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace. There are also many museums and art galleries including the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Britain, London Zoo, and Madame Tussaud's.

Going a bit to the west there is the Science Museum, Natural History Museum, and Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as the Kensington Palace.

Towards the southern bank and across the river from Westminster there is the Globe Theatre, London Eye, London Aquarium, and Tate Modern.

Bristol is one of the hubs of culture in England. Art lovers can visit the famous Bristol Hippodrome. The Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery displays an impressive collection of natural history and archeology. The Bristol Industrial Museum displays the industrial heritage and operates steam railway and boat trips. The Watershed Media Centre and Arnolfini gallery hold exhibitions of contemporary art, photography, and cinema.

Portsmouth will be of special interest to people with naval inclinations. The Posts mouth Historic Dockyard is the first place to visit here. Other attractions include the D-Day Museum, the HMS Victory in the dockyard, the HMS Warrior and the Royal Naval Museum. Then there is the Spinnaker Tower at Gun wharf that is 170 meters tall.

In Hereford, you can visit a cathedral built in 1079 that contains the map of the world from the 13th century. The map is called Mappa Mundi. The cathedral also contains the internationally renowned Chained Library.

Finally, you may wish to visit Bath, which is the most visited city after London. The city of Bath is probably the most comprehensive because it represents all major points from England's history right from the Roman Baths, to Bath Abbey leading up to the Thermae Bath Spa that opened in 2000. Bath has over 80 hotels and 180 Bed and Breakfast joints. Most of them are located in Georgian buildings. Not to mention the hundreds of restaurants, public houses, and bars. Open-top bus tours are a popular tourist attraction.
