Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and is located in the east.

History

In the past 10,000 years Cyprus has seen many civilizations. Since 1974, the island has been divided into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus in the south. However, you can visit both countries on the same visa.

What to do

Whether you are traveling alone or with company, Cyprus has objects to interest everyone no matter how diverse their interests. Food lovers also get to enjoy farm-fresh halloumi cheese and meze, the local appetizers that mix eastern skill with western food material.

What to see

Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus that has been divided into two parts by the UN Green Line. It is a friendly and relaxed place with restaurants and museums. Visiting Nicosia is a good way to have experience the country in a better way than most tourists do.

The most interesting part of Nicosia is the old town enclosed within Venetian walls from the 16th century. Inside you will find many shops.

Archaeologists will enjoy the frescoes of the Cathedral St. John. The Cyprus Archeological Museum shows the collection of Cypriot antiques.

You can even cross the Green Line and visit the Turkish side of Nicosia. That side is smaller but also has its own unique culture.

Paphos

Paphos is another famous spot in Cyprus where, according to legend, Aprodite rose from the waves. Here you will also find Saranta Kolones, a Lusignian fortress that was destroyed by an earthquake. The underground tombs of the kings are old and carved out of solid rock. In the Greco-Roman era, Paphos was the island's capital and still contains the famous palace of the Roman Governor. Another attraction is the House of Dionysos.

Troodos

Troodos Massif is the mountainous regions in the southern parts of Cyprus. Among the mountains is the highest point of the island, Mount Olympus that peaks at 6,507 feet. Located in the western Troodos, the Kykkos Monastery is one of the earliest known Christian Orthodox monastery. Originally built in the 12th century, it has since been renovated and now houses a museum of religious icons. On the Throni Peak like the tomb of the first Cyprus President, Archbishop Makarios.

Colossi Castle

This castle was the headquarters of the Crusaders who built it in the 13th century. The castle was restored in 1933 and shows the military architecture of those days. This area also features lots of orange farms.

Salamis

There is a fully restored Roman amphitheatre, gymnasium, mosaics, temple of Zeus, and many 4th century statues to visit in Salamis. The necropolis covers 7 square kilometers and contains the museum. Located close by is a very neat beach in case you want to swim.
