  Colorado

The state of Colorado is located in the western part of the United States of American. The capital city of Denver is also the largest.

Colorado is one of three states that are enclosed in the lines defined by latitudes and longitudes. Located to the east of the Rocky Mountains are the Colorado Eastern Plains at a wide range of elevations. These plains have sparsely spread population centers with the highest density alo9ng the South Platte and the Arkansas river. There is very little rainfall here, about 15 inches per year. Most of the land is used for ranching or dry-land farming though there is a small proportion that is utilized for irrigated farming.

To the west of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains are the notable spots like Longs Peak, Mount Evans, Pikes Peak, and the Spanish Peaks. This region slopes towards the east and is heavily forested with a bit of urbanization.

Also located here is the Continental Divide. Westward of the Continental Divide is the Western Slope. All the water that goes to the west of the Continental Divide finds its way into the Pacific Ocean through the Colorado River.

Most of Colorado is flat land. Even the interior regions of the Rocky Mountains contain huge parks and basins. North Park is located (obviously) to the north eastern side of the Continental Divide and is drained by the North Platte River which flows into Wyoming.

A little to the south is the Middle Park that is also drained by the Colorado River. South Park is the headwaters for the South Platte River.

Moving further southwards we come to the San Luis Valley, headwaters of the Rio Grande that drains into New Mexico.

The Rocky Mountains contain 54 peaks. All of them are 14,000 feet or higher and are called "fourteeners". These mountains are covered with conifers and aspen to a height of 12,000 feet. Beyond this height, there is only alpine vegetation. The mountains are covered in snow during the winter season which melts by mid-August except for a few small glaciers.

Points of the interest to the south are the San Juan Mountains and to west of these mountains you will find the Colorado Plateau that is a desert bordering on southern Utah. The biggest city on the Western Slope is Grand Junction. Southeast of Grand Junction is Grand Mesa, a flattop mountain.

Going further east one encounters the ski resorts of Aspen, Vail, Crested Butte, and Steamboat Springs.

Spanning from east to west, Colorado is made up of desert basins that are interrupted with plateaus, alpine mountains, and grasslands.
