Some people prefer to rough it on their holidays because they believe they are not getting enough of the rough stuff in their easy lives. Arizona is hopelessly tangled up with two things, the desert and the Grand Canyon. Why this should be so is a mystery because there is much more to Arizona than sand and canyons. Speaking of canyons, there is the Canyon de Chelly with walls as high as 1000 feet and covered with pictographs.

There is a good mix in Arizona of many urban cities that represent modern technology and development and some real history as well. There are museums like the Navajo Nation Museum that covers the life and times of the Navajo people, the Arizona Historical Society Museum, Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Museum, and the Heard Museum.

Arizona is also one of the few places on Earth where you can see a meteor crater. The one you see here is big enough to easily make 20 football fields and is 600 feet in depth. The crater impact took place about 49,000 years ago. There is a new tour of the crater every hour.

If you are interested in the Wild West then make sure to visit the Whiskey Row and Cortez Street. These spots were once famous for their rough saloons and pleasure houses. There is also one of those rare ghosts towns, Jerome, that once a busy copper camp but has not fallen into disuse. It still has an eerie kind of beauty.

People who think desert when they think Arizona will need to rent skis when they discover that it is one of the most popular skiing destinations in America. Go to the Sunrise Park Resort in the Arizona White Mountains for a good time.

There is also plenty of natural life to be experienced in Arizona. Go down to the National Wildlife Refuge where many species of wildlife find sanctuary. There are many species of beautiful birds that you can see on your visit there.
